Greater Rates of Mitochondrial Mutations Discovered in Children Born to Older Mothers
Statististicians participate in a large study of mutations in mitochondrial DNA. A multidisciplinary Penn State and UC Berkley team including researchers in genomics, bioinformatics, medical sciences, forensic sciences and statistics produced and analyzed breakthrough data on mutations that accrue as human mitochondria are passed from mothers to children. These mutations are involved in a large number of diseases. The findings that mitochondrial DNA molecules undergo a small bottleneck, and that mutations are more common in children of older mothers, are therefore critical for genetic counseling.

Kevin Lee wins Academic Computing Fellowship
In 1987, Penn State established an innovative fellowship program in computing applications. The program is for doctoral students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents and have a background and strong interest in computing applications within their disciplines.

Leveraging dozens of faculty with an academic and research interest in sports, Penn State on Nov. 14 announced the creation of the Center for the Study of Sports in Society.

2017 Bioinformatics and Genomics Retreat
The 2017 Bioinformatics and Genomics retreat will be held on September 22nd and 23rd. The one and a half day retreat will feature Dr. Zhiping Weng from University of Massachusetts Medical School as the keynote speaker. There will also be a number of faculty and student talks as well as a workshop session on the September 23rd. The retreat is open to everyone and attendance is free, but everyone must register before September 15th.
