Why Statistics?  In this new global economy, the demand for highly trained statisticians with strong computational and communication skills continues to increase. However, the availability of massive, complex data poses a significant challenge with respect to the education and research training of our graduates.

In this presentation, I will share my experiences as a student, researcher, and educator.   From my days as an undergraduate student in India to my new role as Program Director at the National Science Foundation, I have seen first-hand the importance of the discipline and the significant role statisticians' play in almost all fields of application.   I was fortunate that I had exceptional teachers and mentors at Penn State who have continued to serve as role models to so many students over the years.
