In this talk we will discuss an alternative nonparametric approach to network inference that may be viewed as a fusion of block bootstrap for time series and tiling for spatial processes with the classical network methodology. In particular, we will discuss estimation and uncertainty quantification for network mean degree using nonparametric "patchwork" sampling and bootstrap, under the assumption of the unknown degree distribution.  We will study asymptotic properties of the proposed "patchwork" sampling-resampling procedure and present methodology for selecting an optimal "patchwork" size. We will illustrate application of the proposed "patchwork" procedure to simulated networks with exponential and power law tails. This is a joint work with Mary Thompson, Lilia Leticia Ramirez Ramirez and Slava Lyubchich.
